You might not know that the world is divided on the matter of long division, specifically how to write it when calculating by hand!
China, Spain, Italy, France*, Portugal, Lithuania, Romania, Turkey, Greece, Belgium, Belarus, Cyprus, Ukraine, Russia, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Bulgaria, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Venezuela, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, Peru, Iran, Vietnam, Mongolia.
Dividend first (left), Divisor second (right). Quotient below.
United States, U.K., Australia, New Zealand, India, Canada (except Quebec), Israel, Mexico*
Divisor first (left), Dividend second (right). Quotient above.
Logic: Do you write 3 / 6 = 2 or 3 ÷ 6 = 2? Of course not! So why do it with long division? The divisor should not come first. The notation is and should always be 6 / 3 = 2 or 6 ÷ 3 = 2.
